DevOps Engineer and Golden Kubestronaut with deep Kubernetes expertise and a hands-on approach. Happiest when exploring new tech or untangling a complex problem, from microcontrollers to rockets. Always curious, always building, and never afraid to break things on the way to something better (preferably not in production).
IPv6 was standardized in the late 1990s, yet IPv4 is still the default in most Kubernetes clusters. Public IPv4 addresses now cost money and layers of NAT add complexity, while IPv6 gives every pod a globally routable address, the way the internet was designed to work.
This talk covers the current state of IPv6 support in Kubernetes and across cloud providers, from dual-stack services to IPv6-only clusters. Using Cilium as the CNI, we'll explore why an IPv6-only environment be a good idea, how to set one up, and how to still reach IPv4-only services.
Finally, we'll look at the challenges to anticipate and the lessons learned from running it in production.
